“Life will present you with the people and circumstances to reveal where you are not free”

I heard this quote today listening to a podcast and it hit me really hard. I’ve been on a massive rollercoaster of late – I know I’m not alone.

I had a surge of inspiration to write some things that may resonate with some of you. Some of you will disagree. That’s cool, take what you will, leave the rest.

A reflection I’ve fascinated over recently has been how humans usually fall into a state of resistance or a state of fear when faced with the unknown, instead of allowing life to just unfold and utilise it as an opportunity for growth (me included).

When I observe my circle of friends, family and social media contacts, the current events of the world have revealed two major areas we are each living in fear.

  1. The fear of death
  2. The fear of losing freedoms (or losing control)

For some, it may even be both.

Personally, my experience has been with 2. and the fear that my freedoms will be stripped and taken from me. That I’m losing control.

Well, of course I never had control of anything in the first place – only how I choose to respond in any given moment to what is happening. This doesn’t stop me from resisting at times like I somehow know what should be transpiring better than the Universe.

“This shouldn’t be happening” – I think that a lot.

Do you sometimes fall into this trap too? Of course what ever is happening should be happening. Because it is.

Our choice is to choose how we perceive the thing that is happening. We can choose to perceive as a victim – which will no doubt  bring more proof of suffering and pain.

Or we can choose a different way, where we realise that we have the power to transmute what we see into something much more productive.

This isn’t “positive thinking”. This is recognising that we will find whatever it is we look for. Hence why two people looking at the same thing can see and experience two very different realities.

Your reality. Your choice.

So what about my freedoms? Well, I’ve finally come to understand something rather useful…

Freedom, just like happiness and joy, is a way of being, a feeling. I am free because it is my birth right. I am free because I choose to be. No one can take this away from me because it is a choice. Trying to fight for my freedom, I actually align to the idea that I am not – which is a lie (This doesn’t mean I become complacent in my life, but this is a whole other subject and not for this post).

I am free. I always was. I always will be. So are you.

I have accepted death as a part of life, so for me, this is not where my focus is, but for anyone where death is a trigger – you may be invited to explore how the fear of death is stopping you from truly living or engaging with the people around you.

Collectively, I see the biggest lesson and opportunity for us to grow is realising and rectifying how quickly we move into separation instead of unifying.

We all talk about wanting a better world, and we go around thinking we are contributing to it positively by prosecuting the people who don’t think like us, calling them names and belittling them for their beliefs. How bad do things need to get for us to see this is not the way?

We won’t build a respectful, harmonious, healthy planet by bullying, degrading or forcing our opinions onto other people. Yet we all long for a healthy, happy planet and life.

I truly believe we are being blessed with the opportunity for reflection. An opportunity for HUGE change. We can sit at home, distract ourselves and wait for things to go back to normal… or we can choose to sit and reflect on what fears are coming up for us individually so we can attend to those things (as painful as they may be) and heal them.

If each of us could release a fear or an aspect of self that isn’t serving you or humanity, imagine the kind of world we would be opening back up to?!

It won’t be the “normal” from before. Fuck that normal. There was nothing normal about it. It will be so much more than that.

If you’re wearing a mask and social distancing and you think “I’m doing my bit for the community” – I challenge you to do more. I challenge myself to do more.

What are your fears? Where are you not free? And how are you contributing to improving yourself for the sake of your own life and that of the world.

What you do and how you show up matters to our existence.

Peace xx
